Su, what fun this post is! And remarkable the range of believability of accents from such a diverse and talented group of singers. For me, I am so happy to see Eydie Gorme acquit herself so well in Spanish. Does she speak Spanish? Her "Sabor a Mi" is as beautiful as any I've ever heard. I think her and Steve Lawrence are two of the most unfairly maligned singers ever, the brunt of jokes by people too ignorant to appreciate them. For something totally different and wonderfully orchestrated, their treatment of the Soundgarden classic, Black Hole Sun is a must-hear! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgGBB0hTqo0

Thanks for turning me on to Black Hole Sun, never heard it. It's totally your kind of tune Alk ;-). As far as whether Eydie actually could speak Spanish, I have no idea.

Once in Tokyo I heard this amazing Japanese chick, she sang JUST LIKE Ella. I went up to talk to her after, but she didn't speak English, LOL.

Good to know you are around the neighborhood! (I’m from Venezuela). I remember also in the 90s what a huge excitement it was for me everytime nsync or bsb released spanish versions of their songs. Nunca te haré llorar was so moving in spanish.

Trio Los Panchos was very popular in Southern California in the 50s, the dj's would play them everyday.

Ah, that explains the connection.

I remember others; Pedro Infante, Los Nortenos, (there's no cedilla on my computer), Now that you've jogged my memory, I'll probably think of others.

Now that my husband has been reminded of Los Panchos (which he said still exists, and through the years the personnel has been updated many times) he is playing (and singing) their songs on guitar every day.

How nice for you. There was also Perez Prado from that era, and the DeCastro Sisters from Cuba (if that counts), Lola Belran also comes to mind. In the 70s, I toured with Peggy DeCastro and 2 ringers for her sisters. Around the same era there was Carmen Del Oro with her boy toy; "Hello, my name is Nacho Pinada, I play 13 different instruments." (none of them well.)

Any video of you with those groups? I'd love to see that!

No. The only video that I know of is the one on youtube, where I'm fooling around in a drumshop in Bangkok until the BD pedal got stuck. There's also an audio recording on youtube with DelMar Evans and Johnny Otis. It's called Big John Jeeter, an R&B porno song. I've been in touch with KIm Patterson, from the Bernie McGann 1966 recording on you tube, asking him to put the rest of the record on you tube. He said that he'd see what he can do. quien sabe?
