I had no idea Arthur Clark felt so negatively about the film. Kubrick was, and the words of a friend of mine, a strange bird. For all of his greatness as a filmmaker, he lacked humanity. Nevertheless, the film certainly holds up. Thanks for your insights. As always. I never know what to expect when I open one of your emails. I love the element of surprise. I made a special trip to London from our provincial small town to see 2001 when it first came out. I understood about half of it. The ending particularly flummoxed me, I suppose because I was a psychedelic virgin at the time. The week of the 9/11/2001 attacks on America I was making the big move from the urban Bay Area to a little lane in the woods of an island in the Salish Sea. In fact, I had flown back from Seattle to Oakland the evening of September 10, one of the last flights, having decided to board our two dogs up north rather than have them around as we finished packing. We unpacked the television and spent the day of 9/11 standing around watching quite flummoxed at what we saw. The rental truck was delayed. It took us about an extra week to get up to the island. There were adventures along the way, maybe another time for that story. The dogs were glad to see us and had no idea how the big world had changed, although there were new smells and freedoms in the woods.
PS Hey, we need Jazz de Barro to play up here in the Pacific Northwest. We got jazz clubs and a major festival, Earshot. You’d fit right in! I’d even get on the ferry and come to town to hear you. That is a pretty major offer, not lightly made. Of course, I’d prefer it if you came and played on our island. We have a nice theatre! Not enough interesting music!!!
Had the serendipitous pleasure of meeting Ligeti's son in NY. He told me his dad remained as pissed as ever that he wasn't paid for his music in Kubrick's film. But as you say, I'd never heard of him before that. Makes you wonder who owes who. Still, Stanley should've done the right thing and at least asked before doing it. See ya' in da' 'burgh!
Thank you for this. Made me laugh in a lot of ways, as it threw a lot of my preconceptions into a cocked hat so to speak. I really don't see a connection though between 2001 and the Odyssey. Seems a stretch. But now everyone is finding connections between movies such as The Searchers to the Odyssey. I'm sure someone will soon be posting on the Star Wars\Star Trek connections. And I eagerly await the Honda commercials. Somewhat surprised they aren't already out there. I watched 9/11 on TV after I got home from work and talked about it with my mother, who was living with me at the time. I asked her a question, not specially about it but in relation to her life. Another answer I didn't expect on several levels. I've been to Peru. Very nice country. I remember taking an aerial tour of the Natchez lines. I passed on eating the guinea pig (cuy) though. Have a wonderful time.
Did he state why or what? Seems the connection is so loose you could say the same for just about anything. The Odyssey is about a journey. going home and\or possibly longing for home. 2001 is about going outward. A lot of stories are about the Journey. I.E. it's not the destination it's the Journey. It's a trope. The Odyssey is about that but more important it's about the destination. In Journey stories it's about how the journey changes the person. I don't see than in Odysseus. He's the same person as when he left. I can see the connection between it and Ford's The Searchers. 2001? Don't get it. Not saying it's not there but I don't see it. Next up. The connection between The Shinning and The Odyssey.

I probably wouldn't have made that connection between Homer and 2001 either, except that Kubrick stated it was his influence.
